Hailing from New Zealand, Rosie, designer and founder behind Luna & Rose, spent her university years studying fashion. Whilst struggling with the idea of becoming a fashion designer in a planet that is already filled with un-used apparel and overflowing landfills. It wasn’t until years later - after a foray into the fashion industry in Australia - that she manifested her calling. Channeling her creativity into a brand that was transparent, sustainable and zero waste.
Captivated by the mastery of the artisans in Bali while on a trip there, Rosie partnered with a handful of Balinese craftsmen to bring her designs to life. And wanting to be as hands on as possible, when Luna & Rose went live, she moved to Bali to be closer to her small team.
Having built her dream - an accessories line that has a connection to the makers and a light footprint on the planet, - Rosie doesn’t stop there. Each of the pieces she designs, she creates with meaning - aiming to evoke a sentiment and a memory. Whether It's a feeling of protection, a reminder to land a helping hand or a memento of past travels.
What’s your typical day at the office?
Every day is a slight scramble of many things… Sometimes I’m working from home with a couple of street dogs roaming in, some days I’m out on my scooter checking in with our silversmiths, somedays I’m re-merchandising the store, some days I’m designing with pen & paper and some days I am just staring at spreadsheets in the office!
Which pieces are most special to you and why?
This is a really tough question! I love each piece for a complete and unique reason. For example, I am an avid traveler so I’m never without my St Christopher pendant. Our family ‘joke’ was to call upon St Anthony when ever anyone lost their keys or jumper, so the Saint Anthony pendant is a special inside family sentiment. My favourite Ulu hoops were inspired from a pair of earrings of my Grandmothers… So each piece really does have it’s own story & meaning behind it, both from my perspective as a designer and I hope that that translates onto it’s new owners when they make a purchase from Luna & Rose too.
Where would you go in a time machine?
"Ooooh, back to the 70’s I think! LOVE a good color combo, long hair and the music…
What super power would you like to have?
"For every child to have equal opportunity. How to do that? I am unsure…
Your favorite quote?
I have MANY.
But my favourite two right now are: “A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.” – Roald Dahl
And “…Our intention creates our reality, I believe our thoughts are our energy.' - Ellen DeGeneres
What's one cause that you would want people to rally behind and why?
Protecting our planet in every way that they can... NOW. Because soon it will be far too late. No plastic, no plane food, off-setting their carbon footprint where possible, buying second hand of re-cycled, limiting seasonal consumption, supporting local… So many ways in which we can all be better.
What's your vice?
