Victoria Afanaseva, creative director and maker behind Ceramic by AVA, first came across ceramic when she joined her friends for a classic circle class. Instantly realizing its unbounded potential, she knew she finally found the material to realize the myriad of ideas dancing in her head.

Funnily enough, prior to starting Ceramic by AVA - AVA being the acronym of her full name, - Victoria never wore jewelry. Fuss-free kind of girl, she found most jewelry overbearing in its design. With AVA, she created pieces she always wanted to wear but could never find.

Originally from Russia, Victoria splits her time between Madrid and Bali, where she first went on vacation in 2012 before moving there full time and setting up her studio. With plenty to keep her inspiration flowing - beautiful Bali landscapes, cliffs and mountains, people from all around the world and, of course, unique patterns and textures - we are afraid our love affair with Ceramic by AVA is for the long haul.

Why Bali?

That’s both the easiest and most difficult question to answer. Why Bali? Because it is an endless source of inspiration for me: the sights, the smells, the people, the way of life. Bali was the beginning of a huge change in my life: without it my jewellery brand would never have been born.

What’s your typical day at the “office?”

Like most designers, there is no “typical day” in the office. Sometimes I’m running to my silversmith, other days I’m busy in my ceramic workshop. My physical “office” is in the peaceful recesses of my own home, where I usually indulge in a lot of tea, coffee and good electronic music to keep me calm and focused.

What are the 5 things you cannot live without?

The ocean. My surfboard. Friends who make me laugh. A bowl of good Russian Borsch. Travel.

Who would you love to wear your pieces?

I love the Swedish style blogger, Jacqueline Mikuta. Stunning lady that she is, she has an effortless glamour about her which I think really suits the AVA brand. And I think we’d really get on, as she seems to love travel as much as I do!

Where would you go in a time machine?

Ha ha, good question! I’m a little bit obsessed with the TV drama ‘Peaky Blinders’ at the moment. I love that razzle dazzle era of glamour, flappers, gangsters, speakeasies and underworld excitement. I would love to step into that time, if just for a day!

What's your vice?

I’ve always had a strange fetish for paper: craft papers that designers use to build their models out of, sketchbooks for drawing, notepads for writing down my ideas – you name it! I’m very tactile so I love different textures, and I really appreciate anything which is aesthetically beautiful, no matter how simple a purpose it serves. Feeling good about what you work with on a daily basis is so important.

What’s one cause that you would want people to rally behind?

With my love for Bali and all things Indonesian, I feel passionately about stopping palm oil production because of its devastating effects on the environment, the animals and the people living there.
